Correction: Author Mark Pryor will speak at the January 11 meeting of Sisters in Crime ~ Heart of Texas Chapter. He’s the author of the Hugo Marston mystery novels. You will read more about Mark in our next post, but for now, here’s a picture of him.

[Senator Mark Pryor of Arkansas will NOT speak at the HoTxSinC meeting. The original post might have given that impression, but that was the fault of the wholly and completely mortified editor, who has already tendered her resignation.]

The following is an unofficial summary of the December 14, 2014 HOTXSINC meeting written from memory.  Members, please comment, below, with additions and corrections.

The Sisters in Crime Heart of Texas chapter convened for its holiday meeting and party at Book Spot in Round Rock on December 14, 2014.

President Sue Vertrees opened the meeting and asked for announcements.

Sarah Ann Robertson announced that Martha Carr and Dorothy Hyde Martin would bring copies of their books for sale. She also announced that there is a pizza restaurant in the shopping center where members can eat after meetings if they so desire.

Sue Vertrees reported that during 2014, the chapter added a buffet after the Barbara Burnett Aspiring Writers Event and had created a website/blog. The website/blog has been online since June 14, 2014.

Sue also reported that Mark Pryor, novelist, journalist, and Assistant District Attorney for Travis County, will speak at HOTXSINC’s January 11, 2015 meeting. Mystery novelist George Wier will speak on February 8.

Sue then called for voting for HoTxSinC officers for 2015. She read the slate of nominations:

Treasurer – Martha Carr

Membership – Dave Ciambrone

Historian – Anna Castle

Sue Vertrees presented Sarah Ann Robertson with a card and a sprig of holly in a small pot to commemorate her service to HoTxSinC. Sue noted that Sarah Ann has held numerous offices during the past thirteen years and deserves credit for keeping the chapter alive during some difficult years.

Following the business meeting, Radio Station K-HOT, sponsored by Book Spot, present an old-fashioned radio play, Holly Through the Heart,

written by Gale Albright. The play combines characters from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes, and creates an alternate story of the creation of Sisters in Crime. Five members took part: Gale Albright, Valerie Chandler, Dave Ciambrone, Alex Ferraro, and Kathy Waller. Valerie Chandler provided sound effects.

The story of the story’s inception and writing and pictures from the production appear on the Austin Mystery Writers blog, That post will be reblogged here. More pictures will appear on the HoTxSINC website/blog. A photo, below, taken at HoTxSinC in December 2010 gives a taste of Holly Through the Heart.

Following the play, members enjoyed refreshments and browsing the shelves of Book Spot, which normally does not open on Sundays. It opened on the afternoon of December 14 just so the chapter would have a place to conduct our meeting and have the entertainment and the party as planned. The young ladies responsible for making us welcome and setting up the room did an excellent job. HoTxSinC gives them a most hearty thanks.
